Reading problems

                      Reading problems.

Some common Reading Problems are listed hereunder:

1. Long and complex structure of sentences cause reading problems because students

cannot understand the proper subject-verb agreement.

2. Insufficient vocabulary. The most important thing about reading is that students must

have adequate vocabulary, the full understanding of the sentence pattern and 'rhetorical

patterning' of the text. Vocabulary plays the most effective role in reading. The

understanding and the speed of reading depend on the level of new vocabulary in the

text.

3. Poor readers cannot use words with multiple meanings and usually develop a negative

impression about the text.

4. Students also face problems in figurative and idiomatic meanings of words, phrases or

sentences and fail to make out a proper meaning.

5. Lack of concentration is another mentionable reason for students' poor reading because

concentration is an important factor for a good and effective reading.

(O Improper classroom activities are also responsible for students' poor reading. Teachers

have to design effective activities for teaching reading in the class, because, a successful

teaching of reading in the class depends largely on the proper planning of reading lessons.

5. Deficiency in associating phoneme and grapheme. Students have great difficulty in

acquiring phonic skills. And obviously lack of phonic skills results in their inability to

associate experiences and meanings with symbols.

6. 'Syntactic inference' is also responsible for students' poor reading, because, it causes

confusion among the readers. Different languages have different sentence structures.

Students are to be guided properly so that they can use only English sentence structure.

7. Lack of graded materials is another important reason for the failure of reading. In order to

develop effective reading skills among the students, the teacher should help the class how to approach a text meaningfully.
